College Theme 2014/15: Caring for Carers

The College of Psychiatrists of Ireland has many commitments in training, professional competence and public awareness. A considerable amount of work is achieved annually through its faculties and committees. The College Council has chosen to focus some of that work on a particular theme within mental health services. For 2013, that theme was Youth Mental Health and for 2014 – 2015, the theme is Caring for Carers.

In 2012, the Department of Health published the National Carers Strategy. This has been an important development in progressing carers legislation and signals the Government’s commitment to recognising and respecting carers as key care partners and to responding to their needs, across a number of policy areas
