April 2009

Dear Fellow Trainee

On behalf of the Trainee Committee, I welcome you to this web page of the Trainee section of the College of Psychiatry of Ireland. It is hoped that this site will be a useful resource for sharing information with you on issues that affect psychiatric training in Ireland.

The Trainee Committee is an elected body that oversee the Trainee section of the College. Its broad remit is to promote greater involvement of trainees in College activities, and to contribute towards continued improvements in the standards of postgraduate psychiatric training in Ireland.

To achieve these objectives, our committee members sit on the College Council and every Faculty and Sub-Committee of the College, ensuring that the views of trainees are heard at all levels of decision making & policy implementation. We have also maintained our links with the Trainee Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatry, UK, and with the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT) to ensure that we keep abreast of international developments. The Trainee Committee meets regularly (every 4 – 6 weeks) where feedback from these committees and all other issues that impact on our training are deliberated.

With the inception of our new College, our immediate goal is to set foundations that cement the place of trainees as key stakeholders in the College and ensure that the training agenda remains at the forefront of the College mission. Our focus for this year will therefore be on consolidating the Trainee Committee by broadening its base of representation and optimising exchange of information with trainees at regional and local levels. It is to this end that we are currently reforming this website as a primary means of information sharing. We hope to improve on the content, make it more interactive and ensure that it is regularly updated.

Highlights of our agenda for the year include :

  • Two trainee forums where the committee will meet with trainee representatives from each of the 12 Basic Training Schemes in the country. The first of these will be on Thursday 30th April 2009. We hope to use this bi-annual forum to reach out to ‘grassroots’ trainees in line with our immediate and long-term objectives.

  • An academic conference for all trainees in psychiatry in Ireland will take place in September 2009. This conference will be focused on topics and issues that have direct relevance on the personal and training development of trainees. Further information will be made available on this website as progress is made.

Finally, we wish to thank our inaugural president, Dr Justin Brophy for his commendable leadership, and all officers and administrators of the College for their invaluable support. Together, we will continue to work towards ensuring that postgraduate psychiatric training in Ireland remains comparable with the highest international standards.

For further enquiries or information on the Trainee Committee, please do not hesitate in contacting Liz Kavanagh on behalf of the committee at ekavanagh@irishpsychiatry.ie

With kind regards

Dr Izu Nwachukwu
