As chairperson, I recognise that perhaps more than ever, Adult Psychiatrists are facing significant challenges in the discharge of their day-to-day clinical duties. I am fully appreciative of the extra demands of committing to the membership of our Faculty Executive Committee. I acknowledge with thanks, the immense contributions of our current members in trying to address the issues that face General Adult Psychiatry.

In the immediate term, our focus is to describe the specialty of Adult Psychiatry in terms of who we are and the services we are trained to deliver as specialists in the context of best practice principles. In this regard, we are well advanced in drafting a position paper on General Adult Psychiatry in Ireland, with emphasis on the interfaces we have with other specialties and sub-specialties in Psychiatry.

We are also currently drafting recommendations for the improvements of mental health services for both asylum seekers and the homeless in our society. This is with a view to promoting the best quality care to this vulnerable and disadvantaged group.

Our nascent College of Psychiatry of Ireland is already taking giant strides and the Faculty of Adult Psychiatry is contributing in no small measure to this. It is indeed an exciting time to become involved with us, and it is our hope that this Faculty will become truly representative to all Adult Psychiatrists in Ireland and beyond.

As chairperson, I therefore invite you to join us on this march towards excellence in clinical care in an ambience of effective professional guidance and support.

With kind regards,

Dr Michelle Cahill
