CPD Information for Consultant
Psychiatrists
The CPD Handbook Interim CPD
Handbook "Good Psychiatric Practice in Ireland - February
2009" is currently being updated to reflect
developments in Competence Assurance.
Minister signs
Part 11 of Medical Practitioners Act
The Medical Council has announced that Part 11 of the Medical
Practitioners Act has been signed by the Minister, and will come
into effect on 1st May 2010. This means
practitioners on the General and Specialist Division will be
legally required to register with a Professional Competence
Scheme by 1st May 2011. The professional scheme
for psychiatry will be administered by The College of Psychiatry of
Ireland. There will be a one year period for practitioners to
register and will be issued to all our members shortly.
The enactment of the Medical Practitioner's Act, and the updating
of the Medical Council's "Performance In Practice" booklet, will
effect further changes to our CPD guidelines.
The College of Psychiatry of Ireland encourages all its
Consultant members to comply with these CPD requirements on a
voluntary basis. If you have any queries please contact your
local CPD Co-ordinator or the College Administration Office.
Many eligible Consultants have still not joined the Specialist
Register of the Medical Council. The College encourages all
psychiatrists who are eligible to join the Specialist Register, to
apply to the Medical Council as soon as possible.
